Dinner Is Served, and It Tastes Like a Candy Cane: Our Mint-Only Cooking Show Got Lawless

Some ideas are born in a boardroom. This one was born at 1 a.m. in the Flash Mints group chat after someone said, "Wait, could you actually make a meatball glaze out of starlight mints?" We did what any responsible candy publication would do: we spent an irresponsible amount of money and found out.

The rules were simple. Each of our five TikTok chefs got one course — appetizer, main, or dessert — and a pantry containing nothing but mint candy. No extracts, no fresh herbs, no mercy. Dishes were scored on taste, creativity, and a third category we invented called "brand commitment," which is exactly what it sounds like.

Course One: The Appetizer That Broke a Friendship

Denver-based creator @ChefMarlo went first with a glazed pork belly bite that shouldn't have worked and absolutely did. The move: melt down peppermint patties with a splash of apple cider vinegar until you get a sticky, glossy reduction that hits sweet, cool, and tangy all at once. Marlo called it "teriyaki's chaotic cousin." The judges called it the front-runner.

Not everyone stuck the landing. @DeepFriedDiego attempted a starlight mint vinaigrette over a shaved fennel salad, and while the color was gorgeous — this pale pink, almost cherry-blossom situation — the texture was basically sand. "It's like eating glitter with a grudge," noted one judge, before eating three more bites anyway.

The Main Event (Literally)

For mains, @TheHungryHoney paired a crushed mint chocolate bar crust with a slow-roasted chicken thigh, and honestly? The bark-like shell crisped up in the oven like a candy-glazed pecan crust. If you've ever had a cherry-glazed ham at a Midwest holiday table, this lived in the same emotional zip code.

Then @SaltLakeSizzle went full chaos mode: mint candy-infused barbecue sauce on smoked brisket. Starlight mints dissolved into the sauce base with molasses and chipotle, creating something that tasted like a Texas smokehouse met a December mall in a parking lot. Score: controversially high.

Dessert Was Never Going to Be the Problem

The dessert round was almost too easy, which made it boring — until @BakeOrBust pulled out a peppermint patty-stuffed French toast with a torched marshmallow cap. It was excessive. It was unnecessary. It won the crowd vote by a landslide at the live tasting, because we are all weak.

The Final Rankings (VOTE BELOW)

  1. Marlo's Mint-Glazed Pork Belly — Taste 9/10, Creativity 8/10, Brand Commitment 10/10
  2. Sizzle's Smokehouse Mint Brisket — 8/8/9 (deduction for "smelling like a candle store")
  3. Honey's Candy-Crusted Chicken — 8/7/7
  4. Bust's French Toast Situation — 7/6/10
  5. Diego's Glitter Vinaigrette — 4/9/8 (a tragedy of ambition)

Want to Cook This Madness at Home?

We turned the top three dishes into printable recipe cards, because we refuse to suffer alone. Pro tips from the test kitchen: melt candy low and slow or it seizes, crush starlight mints in a towel with a mallet (not a blender, unless you enjoy scrubbing), and always taste before you commit. Mint candy is a seasoning, not a lifestyle. Usually.
